How Do You Say, “AWESOME!” in Dutch?

with 4 comments

Beelden Bouwers is a Dutch design company that makes these lamp covers out of repurposed, surplus industry wool. I have zero idea how to order from them (and, I don’t speak Dutch) but I don’t think they’d be too hard to replicate with an old sweater and an IKEA lampshade. When I was seventeen working at movie theater, someone found a large man’s sweater and put it in the back room. I asked whose it was, and was told it was being held as a “lost and found” item. “If no one claims it,” I said, “I want it.” (When I showed Jen my new threads she said, “Of course you wanted it.” I was pretty well known for my fondness of odd clothing choices. Hey, I was frugal!)

I still have that sweater, although I don’t wear it, and I think it would make a cozy lampshade for my house. Time to dig it up.

ps – I want to go to Europe. I think I’d like it there. Goals for 2010: save up enough to visit Holland.

  1. oddly enough…after 3 months in amsterdam i may have the answer to your question! lekker is a favorite dutch word, much like awesome/sweet/stellar/fantastic/radical. some examples of how it may be used…

    1. i was on a train and a dad pulled a chocolate bar out of his bag. his 3 children under 8 shrieked, lekker!!!

    2. at lunch, the waitress asks how was everything? yeah, it was lekker

    3. i accidentally mow down a pedestrian while riding my pink bike around the city….oh shit! are you ok?! i'm so sorry!! yeah, it's all lekker.

i cannot emphasize enough how lekker your trip to holland would be, good good times.

  2. Lekker!

  3. I'm sorry, do you not remember our very brief time in Holland? We stood around and tried to read things in Dutch. Awesome.

  4. I remember so little! I remember the Sesame Street book “Ike Ban Bert” or something like that. I remember the cozy coffee shop, and I remember that I had a really horrible black eye. Oh, I also came across a clown speaking in Dutch. That still gives me nightmares.
