laundry

The first time at the laundromat was smooth and totally unremarkable. This is good. I’d rather no excitement befall me while I’m washing my skivvies. That didn’t stop me from being nervous about it, though. I was worried I’d do it wrong and piss people off or something, but it was fine. Going in the middle of the day was a good move.

It’s expensive! I realized I could halve the cost, though, by installing a clothesline in the back yard. I bought what I thought I need and brought it all to Rob, like, “Here.” and he was like, “No.” and I was like, “Omg! WTF?!” and he was like “Ok fine. I’ll put one up.” and went to the hardware store to get everything I forgot, and now it’s up.

My pj pants look like they’re trying to make a run for it.

  1. Hmmm – I thought you said you used to go with a friend/ex to the laudromat where I took that picture from…?

  2. Well I promise you will get less nervous… I, too, was nervous my first time. But, sadly, it will probably never really be fun. Unless you make friends with the owner’s daughter, or chat with your fellow washers about breaking news (I was doing laundry when Jacko died…). Beware of underwear and socks accidently left in the washer before you… gross.

  3. G, I’ve been IN one; the rock I lived under wasn’t that deep. I just never used one.

    Ew to other people’s underwear!

  4. This is why you bring disinfecting wipes to the laundromat.

  5. I think I’m going to make my first laundromat trip soon.

I recently moved into an awesome new apartment, and was told that there was a washer and dryer in the basement. On Thursday night, I ventured down there for the first time. After I tripped down the nearly vertical steps and slammed my head on the ceiling a half-dozen times, I tossed my clothes in the moldy-smelling washer and eventually into the off-kilter dryer that sounded like it contained a monster trying desperately to claw its way to freedom. The basement itself looked like it was carved out of the dirt, and I convinced myself I saw a snake slither into the shadows behind the furnace.

  6. Y’know, I have to say that my fondest memories of laundromats is in Sandy Hook. Harry and I used to go in on Saturdays and have a beer at the bar across the way, and socialize with all of the local Hookers. But in general, Stu! is right: laundromats ≠ fun.

Also: Clothes lines are a super good, cheap idea. But you should know that you won’t get that awesome, soft feeling, and that made me sad when I discovered that. :[ But w00000000t for cheap AND environmentally friendly! :]

  7. I have a washer/dryer combo that I have been happy with. I took a couple of big loads to the laundromat last week after we got home from DC just to get caught up. I like our little laundromat/cleaners. They’re open 24/7 and they are quite friendly.
