Chookooloonks Ponders Life Lists

Karen wrote an incredible post about Life Lists, and she makes so many good points, bang-bang-bang! one after the other, that I was shouting, “Yes! YES!” and fist-pumping in front of my laptop. I had to share.

Here are her major headings:

1. First of all, write it down.
2. Do not be intimidated by coming up with 100 things.
3. Sprinkle some everyday stuff in amongst all the mondo-beyondo-type stuff.

I would add that you should have small things, medium things and large things and long-term goal things mixed in. Small could be catching fireflies on a summer night, or my “Paddle boats in Prospect Park with Rob”. Medium things are things like parasailing, whale watching, and trying a trapeze. Large things are things I generally think of as requiring a passport and/or a lot of money, and long-term things are things like running a marathon or speaking a language fluently.

4. Consider things you’ve already done before, but may not have done with a particular person, or in a certain way.
5. Make a few items fit under the heading “doing something I love many, many times.”

I’m doing this with my 1000 Clicks project.

6. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU PUT SOMETHING ON YOUR LIST THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BAD ABOUT YOURSELF FOR NOT COMPLETING IT.

This is why “size six jeans” aren’t on my list!

7. Do not let the fact that you might not complete every item on your list within your lifetime stop you.
8. Don’t feel like you’re limited to 100 things.

All really excellent points! Go read the whole thing – she is way smart.

p.s. I’ll add this: Having a Life List has made me more inclined to try new things. I don’t think I would have said yes to a belly dancing class, or joining Weight Watchers, if I hadn’t made the effort to stick my neck out and do stuff that’s new (and sometimes kind of uncomfortable and intimidating) to me. I am more adventurous now! So there’s an added benefit to making a Life List, at least for me. Maybe for you, too?

I also wrote a post about Karen’s awesome post today. The life list has been absolutely great for me. Her post makes so many great points – I hope it encourages more people to get stared on this whole life list thing.

Limited to 100? I am having a hard time coming up with that many! I love your 1000 clicks project btw. Such a neat idea.

@ erika edith – Feel free to steal shamelessly from others! I stole Karen’s 1000 faces project, and when I got to meet her in person, I was bursting to tell her, and she was delighted!
