I’m currently doing Weight Watchers, and every week I blog a bit about what I’ve learned and experienced, and whether I’ve lost or gained weight for the week.
This week held no great insights, major set-backs or glowing victories. Just a small one: I’m down .8 pounds. My efforts are slowing, and I know what needs to happen next to shake it up, but I just… I don’t want to!
I’ve mentioned it before: exercise and I are not friends. I’ve been walking, though, which is a good activity that doesn’t require a special bra to hold down “the thunder”. And spring is coming! That means we’ll be walking to Prospect Park for off-leash hours with the trio.
I’m also making an effort to eat more vegetables. Kale and chard have been my favorites lately, and I’ve been adding dried cranberries to my salads because they’re really fun and less gross than raisins.
Do you have non-awful exercise activities you like to do? Kick-ass veggie dishes you can share?

I’ve recently discovered the wonders of Brussels Sprouts. I’d always been adverse but for no reason other than people are supposed to hate Brussels Sprouts. There are some great recipes online. Lots of quick and simple recipes. And Brussels Sprouts are quite tasty. Just a suggestion.

Brussel Sprouts are awesome!
And as for exercise… I feel your pain. Buy some three pound weights and leave them near the couch. Work your arms or stretch during commercials.

Dancing! I’ve made a few dance mixes, put one on, and just go crazy for about 30 minutes, 2-3 times a week. I know I look totally ridiculous when I do it but I don’t care. I jump, kick, and sometimes even do naughty hip thrusts; it’s so much fun. I even do it in front of a mirror sometimes and laugh at myself. It feels good to not be so serious and just have a good time, and a total bonus that it’s good for me.

Roasted brussel sprouts:
Clean brussel sprouts and boil for 3-5 mins. Take out of boiling water, and put on baking sheet. Let cool.
Drizzle with the best olive oil you have handy. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 20 mins.
My favorite is when there’s loose leaves – they get crunchy.
Good luck!

Mmm! I love the crunchy loose leaves, too! This is my favorite way to cook ‘em: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/goldencrusted-brussels-sprouts-recipe.html
I just clicked the Vegetables category on foodgawker. http://foodgawker.com/post/category/vegetables/ Now I’m craving veggies!

I ride my bike, schwinnifred, around the city instead of driving and that seems to be enough for me right now. Sometimes I like to run (well, jog) around the park, but right now I’ve mostly been riding the bike around.

I really don’t have any great veggie recipes… my go-to for eating lots of veggies it to make a big pot of veggie soup… you can use veggie, chicken, or beef broth or stock and add any veggies you like. I usually just grab several bags of frozen veggies… pearl onions, peas, carrots, corn, green beans, etc… sometimes I’ll add a can of diced tomatoes and/or a diced potato… it’s a great way to eat veggies and it’s an easy way to keep something quick and easy in the fridge. You can heat up a bowl of soup anytime and not feel guilty for eating it, even if it’s a late night snack. I’ve experimented with adding different herbs and seasonings to the soup, but I’ve found that I prefer to just keep it simple… that way you don’t get tired of the leftovers. If you want to mix it up a bit you can add some ginger, garlic and soy sauce to the broth and use a bag of Asian-style frozen veggies instead of regular ol’ mixed veggies. So, yeah… soup… and stir-fry… we eat a lot of stir-fry around here.
As for exercise… um, let me know if you find some fun exercises to do because I totally hate exercising, too.

Eat grapefruit and drink water. Many times when your body is saying ‘I’m hungry’, it’s actually thirsty. Drink a big glass of water when you first wake up. Walk everywhere. Eat until you’ve finished half of what you think you should eat in a meal. If you get hungry an hour or two later, finish the other half. Get a good night’s sleep and try not to go to bed with a lot of ‘drink’ in you. Your liver cleanses your blood while you sleep unless it is working to detoxify you from the alcohol.

ZUMBA, ZUMBA!!! I love it. Since 1/10/2011, I have lost 13lbs. I look forward to it and always feel great afterwards. But, you can turn anything you love into a great workout.
I love a raw kale salad. Cut Kale into thin slices, add lemon juice and sea salt- massage the leaves until they wilt (will look like it’s been cooked). Then add olive oil, sliced red pepper, black olives (optional) and pine nuts – mixed and you are done. SO YUMMY! Try it. You can build this kale salad with different veggies. It’s not my recipe I read about it. But, it’s a staple salad for me.

I second Zumba and am also a proponent of Punk Rope. Kimmy teaches it in south Brooklyn, and she’s fab.
Check out my friend’s site re: veggies and Weight Watchers.

I love to saute red peppers, onions, squash and mushrooms in a little olive oil with italian seasoning. When the veggies are not quite done I add in a little whole grain pasta and a smidge more olive oil. Let it simmer together for a couple minutes and it’s a pretty quick healthy meal.
As for exercise, I’ve been doing the nordick track every morning since the new year. It took awhile, but I am finally used to getting up in the morning and getting it done. I follow it up with crunches that are actually helping my abs look better than they have in at least 10 years.
Good luck with trying new things. My friend made me brussel sprouts sauted with almonds and it was delicious. I should get the recipe from her…
