Araneus Cavaticus
I came nose-to-nose with a barn spider in my back doorway early last week, and watched for a while as she caught a few insects trying to fly into my kitchen. By the next morning she and her web were gone, but the next evening when I peeked around 10, she had spun a new web in the same spot. I purposefully left my door open that night, giving me a breeze and her a bug bonanza. This has been happening for days.
Every morning she’s gone (they eat their webs at dawn and sleep all day), and every evening she’s spinning again: up, down, around, circle-circle-circle, repeat! in the dusk.
It’s magic.
(She hasn’t written “Some Pig” yet, but I’m hopeful.)

You are a brave brave girl. I would have screamed and demanded it meet it’s death. Good for you! I love that instead you observed and respected it. Surprised the dogs didn’t eat it though.

Lucky you! We have our very own “Charlotte” (araneas cavaticus) in an upper window of our house and have been watching her for weeks come out every night and spin her beautiful web….no messages yet, but my children are anxiously awaiting her first word! Glad to know someone else out there has enjoyed one of these amazing spiders!
