How Do You Clean a Waffle Iron?

Do you know that in Brooklyn, there are services that will knock on your door, take your dirty laundry, and return the next day with it folded and clean? It’s pretty much the greatest thing ever if you are recovering from the flu, and you can pay using a credit card online, so it’s super easy. I sent off two bags yesterday, and finally washed the very last dish in the pile from New Years. I even managed to clean the waffle maker (guys, is there some sort of trick to cleaning a waffle iron that I’m unaware of? Because it was kind of hell.) My appetite is slowly returning, too (welcome back, food!) which means that NOW 2013 can begin.

Have a happy weekend.

I gather that the waffle maker isn’t the kind where you can just pop off the waffle plates and put them to soak for a little bit in the sink?

I have something similar (pizzelle iron) where the plates are an integral part of the whole sheebang, and of course it is electric so I can’t get it wet. I will do an initial wipe-down with a paper towel lightly coated with olive oil. That gets most of the crumbs and stuff off. For more tenacious burned on dough, I scrub that off with coarse salt and an old toothbrush. Then I just wipe all of the remains into the sink. No water needed.

I’m a few days late, but Happy You Year! I hope it’s spectacular!
