Grocery Delivery

Earlier this week I had rice for dinner. Nothing else, because there was nothing else to cook, and I’m all, “Really, Amber? Do better.”

It’s that life balance I keep talking about. Business exploded with Valentines Day week weddings, and I forgot to go grocery shopping. There’s a great company that delivers to New York address called Fresh Direct, but I don’t usually let myself use them because they charge a $5 delivery fee and that feels wasteful.

Then I stopped, and thought. Five dollars, and I don’t have to go to the grocery store in the cold or eat just rice for dinner. I can just click-click-click and have groceries delivered, which is way cheaper and better for me than ordering takeout, my other “in a pinch” alternative. Oh! Silly me.

Grocery delivery: it’s wing glue.

I’ve yet to try Fresh Direct myself, even though I feel like my boyfriend brings it up every week… Part of it’s the “I live in the basement with no doorbell, and that confuses delivery people and it’s gonna get f-ed up” fear that also usually prevents me from ordering takeout and part of it’s the whole inner critic going, “You have a grocery store a block and a half from you! Are your legs broken?!!”

    But man… is it tempting.

Oh, balancing life, so tricky! My problem is I’m never home for the people to deliver to. I keep saying I’ll pick something up on the way home, but that almost always ends up being takeout, which is terrible! I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you. $5 for the convenience? Sounds like an okay cost for figuring out the balance :)

A while ago when I was trying to create healthier eating habits I decide to fully commit to Fresh Direct. I have a package where I pay a flat fee for 6 months of as many deliveries as I want and if I order even every 2 weeks it cuts the delivery charge more than in half. I figured my time was worth the money, I could use the 2 hour delivery window to do useful things at home, and that if it helped me to eat healthier foods it was a good thing. Glad you treated yourself and had more than rice!

$5 is way worth it, where I live I have to walk uphill home from the grocery store and while each week I try to convince myself it is helping me have nice arms if I could I would so pay $5 to not have to do it!
