2010 Gift Guide – For a Friend: Postcards from Penguin

Stephanie, the manager of Word in Brooklyn, sent Rob and me one of these clever postcards a few weeks ago. It’s a collection of 100 unique postcards featuring reproductions of iconic Penguin covers. I really like the box it comes in, too; it’s so perfect for gift-giving.

2010 Gift Guide – Hostess Gift: Waffles and Dinges Speculoos Spread

Everyone in New York City seems to love the waffle truck Wafels & Dinges. The Belgian waffles they sell are delicious, the workers are friendly, and they have a fantastic Twitter account which they use to broadcast both their location and their hilarious daily challenges. Anyone who goes to buy a waffle and participates in the daily challenge gets one free topping on their waffle. Oh, excuse me, one free “dinges”.
One of their most popular “dinge” is speculoos spread. I got into an argument with a worker who tried to get me to taste it, telling him that anything with such an awful name could not possibly be good. He insisted I try it, and promised to give me a new waffle if I hated it.
It’s wonderful. The consistency is like peanut butter, but it melts a little when you smush it on a waffle. It’s supposed to be gingerbread flavored, but to me it tastes exactly like liquid gram cracker.
Now you can have a jar of it at home!
$8 per jar from Waffles and Dinges

2010 Gift Guide – Over the Top: The World’s Largest Gummy Bear

Things I would do with this:
- Throw a “come eat my big-ass gummy bear” party.
- Smuggle it into the movies and have a REALLY fun time getting caught with it.
- Leave it on Rob’s side of the bed for a fun surprise.
- Carry it around in a sling and ask strangers on the street if they think my baby is cute.
- Give it to my 10 year old nephew (and then hide from my sister-in-law).
- Stick my hand through the middle of it just to see what it feels like.
What would YOU do?
$30 from Vat 19

If the thought of eating a five pound, 12,600 calorie gummy bear makes your stomach hurt, these real-size gummy bear soaps are much less over-the-top. Just don’t eat them.
$7 for a package of 25, also from Vat 19
p.s. The guys at Vat 19 made a hilarious video of some fun experiments with the World’s Largest Gummy Bear.
